A Captain is assigned to work on a Tugboat tows barges and other vessels. Steers the tugboat to push or pull vessels to various destinations while avoiding reefs, shoals and other hazards to shipping. Utilizes navigation devices such as radar, depth finder, compass, maps, and USCG aids to navigation. Will oversee the maintenance, repair, inspection and daily work progress of the crew; maintain daily logs, record books, and other reports; and will periodically check inventory and requisition supplies, materials, and equipment. When aligning the tugboat with a vessel and affixing towing lines, the Captain will handle the winch controls. May occasionally lift and carry items generally weighing 31 to 50 lbs. when assisting with repairs or when handling materials, supplies and parts.
