ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Deepening work at Arthur Kill (AK) included the removal of both soft material for beneficial upland disposal and hard rock material. The AK 3 channel deepening involved the removal of approximately 1.1 million cubic yards of rock that were disposed of at an offshore artificial reef site. Prior to sediment removal by the dredge No. 54, this contract required hard rock drilling and blasting by the Apache. The second contract AK HARS, included dredging 586,000 cubic yards from 12 locations along the channel — 225,000 cubic yards to be disposed of at the Historic Area Remediation Site (HARS) and 361,000 cubic yards to be disposed upland.
