ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Originally bid as two separate contacts, Deer Island was performed by the Rivers and Lakes Division over a two-year, two-phase construction period. Dredging work involved the excavation of 2.6 million cubic yards of material from two miles of the Missouri River. As part of the Missouri River recovery program, this project was designed to restore lost habitat within the river and to create shallow water habitats along the main channel border, outside of the Deer Island State Game Management Area in Iowa. Successfully completed in 2014, this project restored fish habitats, bird nesting sites and chutes to return the original flow of the river.
