ABOUT THIS PROJECT

This renourishment project entailed rebuilding Sand Island, a piece of land located offshore of Alabama and south of Mobile Bay. The cutter suction dredge Alaska pumped approximately 1,400,000 cubic yards of sand from the Sand Island Beneficial Use Area to form an underwater Berm and then an island around the lighthouse. As a result of this beneficial use project, the 140-year-old Sand Island Lighthouse has gained critical protection from environmental elements.
